Itinerary
October 13-26, 2001

Day 1:
Arrive at Manchester Airport. Meet in Terminal #1 at Cook's Money Exchange Booth.   Drive to Riccall near York via Selby Abbey, founded by William the Conqueror in 1069 for the Benedictines. Selby was an original Roman settlement and the birthplace of King Henry I, Son of William the Conqueror.      
                                    
Overnight: South Newland's Farm, Riccall.   Lunch/Dinner

Day 2: York Minister
Tour York by tour bus. Walk the Roman/medieval walls. Visit the Minster, the largest medieval cathedral north of the Alps with origins dating back to A.D. 627. Visit the Shambles with its medieval shops.

Overnight: South Newland's Farm, Riccall.   Breakfast/Lunch

Day 3:  
Boat cruise on the River Ouse in York. Visit the Jorvik Viking Centre and see a reconstruction of Viking York. Visit the York Castle Museum and its medieval, Victorian and Edwardian artefacts. Finally, history buffs will want to attend the Yorkshire Museum for Roman and Anglo-Saxon history. An alternative will be the National Railway Museum.

Day 4:
Drive to the coastal resort of Filey. Visit the chalk cliffs of Bempton and Flamborough, jutting out into the North Sea and home, in summer, to thousands of nesting seabirds. Explore the tidal pools at low tide. Walk the cliffs and scan the sea for birds, seals and porpoise.

Day 5:Whitby
Close to Filey is the popular seaside resort of Scarborough. Here stands the remains of a magnificent castle high on the north hill, overlooking the sea. Formerly a Roman signal station, the castle was founded in 1158 by Henry II. Next we visit the fishing town of Whitby, with its 13th century abbey founded by St. Hilda in 657. We will visit the harbour, the Abbey and the Captain James Cook Museum, where detailed information on the voyages of the famous navigator can be found. In the afternoon, we drive over the North Yorkshire Moors to the picturesque village of Goathland and south to walk on the Wheeldale Roman Road.

Day 6:  Yorkshire Dales                 
Visit the lovely wooded Forge Valley, the pine forest of Wykeham, with its vista over the Yorkshire Dales and the market town of Pickering to its Norman castle and parish church of Sts. Peter and Paul, home of a series of medieval frescoes. Finally, the 1190-built castle of Helmsley, much of it destroyed by Parliamentarians during the Civil War.

Day 7:
A day to explore Filey: its 12th century church of St. Oswald's; the Dams Nature Reserve; the Brig, a rocky peninsula jutting into the North Sea, complete with tidal pools and swirling seabirds; the Country Park and Arndale Ravine.

Day 8: Rievaulx Abbey
We exit Filey for the northern Dales, stopping first at the spectacular scenic remains of the 12th century Cistercian Rievaulx Abbey. Next we travel to Thirsk and the veterinary surgery of James Herriot. We will also drive through some of the most beautiful Dales areas including such pretty villages as Hutton-le-Hole.

Day 9:
Drive and walk the beautiful Dales and moors of North Yorkshire. Walk the Pennine Way and sample a pint at the Tan Hill Inn, the highest pub in England! Drive through the villages of Keld, Thwaite, Muker and Gunnerside; the scenic waterfalls en route where Dippers and Grey Wagtails inhabit the streams. Explore the Buttertubs Pass and its fascinating limestone formations, home to rare plants and ferns.

Day 10: Reeth
Today we visit Richmond and its magnificent Norman castle, built in the 11th century by Alan of Brittany and dominating the Swaledale landscape. Nearby is Easby Abbey, founded in 1151 along the River Swale. Next we travel to Middleham, another market town surrounded by meadows and fields suitable for the breeding and training of racehorses. We will hike through some of these before attending the historic Middleham Castle, former home of King Richard III.

Day 11: Hadrian's Wall
We motor north today to Hadrian's Wall built by the Romans to deter invasion
by the Scots. We will visit several sites. The spectacular High Force waterfall
will be our scenic stop before we drive over the high moors back to Reeth.

Day 12:
Today we head south to the Southern Dales. En route we stop first at scenic Aysgarth Falls, then west to Malham Tarn and a short walk to view the limestone cove. Then on to Skipton and our accommodations.

Day 13:
An early morning walk on Ilkley Moor, a hike along the River Strid near Bolton Abbey, then on to Skipton Castle, a Norman-built edifice which is perfectly preserved today! Next to the Bronte Museum at Haworth, former home of writers Charlotte and Emily Bronte.

Overnight: Skipton. Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Day 14:
After breakfast, we proceed to Manchester Airport for our flight home.
